We recently took a trip to the beautiful city of Oxfordshire to visit the iconic Wedding venue – Bodleian Libraries. Set in the city centre, the venue is not only stunning and grand, but also within a really idyllic location with transport links to the centre of London and Birmingham. Part of the University of Oxford, the building is bursting at the seams with history which has been kept alive by the onsite team.
The building is absolutely breathtaking and definitely brings a ‘wow’ factor to your day. The city of Oxford itself has plenty of medieval architecture, known as the City of Dreaming Spires, perfect for your photographs. If you are a lover of books, literature and architecture, this could be the perfect venue for you, with the library holding 13 million printed items and over 80,000 e-journals.
One of the oldest libraries in Europe, the building was first opened to scholars in 1602 and is still used by students to this day, as well as visitors to the attraction.
The Divinity School
We were met by the lovely Megan, Events Co-ordinator, who first took us into the Divinity School, which is the perfect space for your reception and can seat up to 120 guests. Full of gothic architecture, we just couldn’t stop staring at the stone-carved ceiling, full of history and beautiful decoration.
The space is perfect If you are looking for a medieval, gothic style to your day, or even if you want something modern and contemporary, the space is a blank canvas and can be dressed to suit your taste and style.
The venue is still used to this day for the students and also for visitors to come and relish in the history and tranquillity of the building, so although the space can be hired privately for your Wedding, you must discuss with the team before deciding on your timings for the day.
Convocation House and Chancellor's Court
Moving through from the Divinity School, the space is perfect for your Wedding ceremony with chapel style seating for up to 100 guests. Guests will enter via Chancellor’s Court into Convocation House for the ceremony and will be in awe of another beautifully decorated, medieval style ceiling.
The history of this space? This was once used as a court room and also meeting space for the university.
As well as hosting your day within an iconic building, the photograph opportunities are endless, including the monumental neo-classical circular domed building Radcliffe Camera, where you can really get some truly stunning photographs. The building is known as Oxford’s most impressive piece of classical architecture, Camera meaning building or vault. The Radcliffe Camera, originally the Radcliffe Library, was built to house the science library.
There is also the Old Schools quad - you almost feel as if you are at Hogwarts! This is a great space for your drinks reception, after your ceremony and before the Wedding breakfast. The space is so picturesque and is perfect for a summers day!
There are many other picturesque spots such as the Wren door, a popular spot for couples, post ceremony.
Bodleian Libraries is a completely dry hire venue, meaning you can make the space exactly how you want it, using the suppliers you love to style your day. The preferred caterer for the venue is Oxford Fine Dining. Thinking of hiring a wedding planner to recommend top suppliers in the Oxfordshire area? Contact us here.
Harry Potter fans? Inspector Morse? Have you seen the Golden Compass or The History Boys? These are just some of the productions which have been filmed at the venue, with Divinity School playing host to the infirmary of Hogwarts School! How amazing is that! You could be getting married where actors such as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have spent their days on set!
As well as the venue being completely impressive and grand, Megan and Martha, the events team, are such a lovely and informative team so you are in great hands!
